Mel Bonis – Trois Danses for Flute Ensemble

This is an arrangement for nine flutes (from the piccolo to the contrabass flute) based on the original piano score as well as Bonis orchestration and contributes with a delicate addition to the growing repertoire for flute ensembles.
The three dances was published in 1909 at Demets. They are dedicated to the composer’s three children from her marriage to Albert Domange – Pierre, Jeanne and Edouard. Mel Bonis refers back to the “old style”, which was very popular at that time. In the Bourrée, Mel Bonis follows the traditional form in a fast 2/2 beat, which is initiated by a short one-eighth-off-beat. One long and two short notes are the basis of the elegant pavane. The three dances was first conceived as separate piano pieces but was later on orchestrated by the composer.

Maurice Ravel – Menuet Antique for Flute Ensemble

This arrangement for flute ensemble, scored for 4 C flutes (with the first doubling on piccolo), 2 altos, 2 basses, and contrabass, gives some challenges for all players and utilizes the low flutes very prominently.
The spirit of Emmanuel Chabrier lies behind the central section of Menuet Antique, the first of Ravel’s works to be published (in 1898). The piece’s “antiquity” comes out in the flattened leading notes of cadences. Altogether more modern and Ravelian are the harmonic scrunches, beginning with the very first chord, that lend impetus to the imitative lines which follow. Rhythmically too, Ravel plays games with the minuet form, often grouping his phrases in twos rather than threes.

Claude Debussy – Élégie for Contrabass flute & Piano

Debussy wrote his Elegie in December of 1915 when he was shell-shocked by the devastating events of the First World War and also still recovering from cancer surgery. Elegie was the only piano piece he composed during that year, and it was to be his last for that instrument. Due to his deteriorating health, he wrote very little afterwards.
